A Better Life Cabins - Bartlett, NH - About Us 2
Now for some pretty stuff. This is Bartlett Brook which runs across the middle of the property. The picture was taken New Year's Eve 2000. Not too shabby. This view of the Saco
River was taken from the River Road Bridge in Bartlett. O.K. time for a little more story-telling. We purchased the cabins with the hopes of also being able to put in a campground. I say 'hopes' because the campground aspect would require being granted a special exception by the Zoning Board of Bartlett. In late October 2000 we hired an engineer to put our ideas on paper, verified that the town would be able to supply sufficient water for our endeavor (we're on a town water system), had test pits done for the septic, and had the wetlands on the property identified. Notice this started in October...we still didn't own the property. Once we were armed with all of the test results, conceptual plans, etc. we filed the necessary paperwork with the Selectmen of Bartlett. This was merely a formality as they could not approve our project without a special exception from the zoning board. As they were supposed to, the Selectmen promptly rejected our proposal. We then took our rejection letter, all of our data, plans, etc. & filed a formal application with the zoning board. Our new neighbors were notified of our request & a public meeting was set for February 12, 2001. Bartlett is a pretty tight (and very small) community & frankly almost everyone knew what we were up to LONG before the notice was published in the paper. We knew we were taking a risk closing on the property before we had approvals in hand, but it was a calculated risk and sometimes in this life you just have to 'go for it'. The Zoning Board carefully studied our proposal, asked some very probing questions, got way down into the details & after approximately 1 1/2 hours granted our 'special exception. We were now officially "A Better Life Cabins & CAMPGROUND".
